Want to go “back to the future” for a good cause? Hilo will get its chance from 6-9 p.m. Thursday as a real “Back to the Future” DeLorean “time machine” lands at the Hilo Town Tavern during Wendell Ing &Friends’ performance.
The 1982 DeLorean was built by University of Hawaii at Hilo grad Oliver Holler and his wife, Terry. People will have the chance to sit on the car and take photos. The event is free, but all donations will go to Team Fox, a branch of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
The Hollers have a goal: Travel into the future to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
In 2001, the Hollers hand-built their own DeLorean “time machine,” just like the one in “Back to the Future,” and were seeking a purpose for their passion.
As volunteers for Team Fox, they decided to drive from their home in South Carolina to all 50 states, spreading the word about the foundation and collecting donations along the way. With more than 430,000 miles and 49 states covered so far, they saved the best for last — they’re now in Hawaii.
Their Hilo Town Tavern appearance is just one of the appearances the Hollers and their DeLorean will make on the Big Island. Other appearances and dates will be announced as hosting venues are established and information becomes available.
As Marty McFly says in “Back to the Future,” “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.”
